Defence DT Roadmap

The defence sector has absorbed the Digital Twin Roadmap and other sources and is working on its own Defence DT Roadmap, specific to the defence sector.

The first version was posted earlier this year and now, starting at the beginning of July 2021, a 2-year program will expand 7 topics in a series of ‘sprints’. Each topic is led by MOD and Industry representatives and has support at high level within the MOD.

They are looking to engage as widely as possible, particularly with people in other sectors who can contribute their experience to the work.

As well as the existing wider defence supplier-base, this is a route for people outside the defence sector to work alongside those primes and SMEs already there. It will provide opportunity to explore the many facets of defence provision (from estate management to weaponry and support services) to assess marketing opportunities. They claim there is nothing they don’t buy - from computers to toilet rolls and socks!

The work is being organised via Team Defence Information (TDI). If you are interested, contact Steve Green before the end of next week (steve.green@teamdefence.info) for full details or to register with the group(s) of interests.

I am not sure if it is open to non-members of TDI. I will be offering to post specific aspects of the topics on this forum if they wish to gather the views of the wider DT community that is represented here.

A short summary of the 7 topics is presented below:

Title

Topic

Multi Domain Operations

Create the vision, and work with the other Task Groups to build up the evidence pack to support the use of Digital Twins, their federation and integration in multi-domain operations.

Engineering & Safety

Develop policy and standards to ensure integrity requirements of digital twin informed decisions.

In-service Sp (EST Pilots)

Exploit advancements in DT technologies and architecture to enhance platform availability, reduce cost and inform better decision making through life.

Supply Chain Optimisation

A federated Digital Twin that supports generation of Defence wide logistic operating picture supported by simulations enabled by live connections from across the end-to-end industry and MoD supply chain, providing visibility of asset movements, supply chain process, supporting equipment, platforms and facilities, as appropriate.

Future Test & Evaluation

Increasing need to harness digital twins to augment/reduce live fire test providing coherence between experimentation, test & training through reuse of data and synthetic test environments.

Accelerated Cap Dev

Produce a vision of the Model Based Enterprise with vignettes that describe the value of Digital Engineering applied across the lifecycle.

And use cases that provide specific examples to substantiate our findings.

DT Mapping

Mapping implementation projects and to identify lessons to inform the practice, process, and technology development for each of the focus areas.
